About the Epilepsy Center

The Epilepsy Center at Boston Children's Hospital offers evaluation, testing, treatment and counseling for children withepilepsyand seizures. We offer a full range of epilepsy care, including medication-based treatment for seizures and comprehensive evaluation for epilepsy surgery, when needed.

We evaluate children of all ages and abilities, from premature infants to adolescents, and our technologists provide skilled, compassionate care for each child.

We specialize in pediatric epilepsy

Our epilepsy team specializes in treating kids. Everyone on our team, from our administrative staff and social workers to nurses and doctors, are experienced in dealing with the unique needs of children.

We understand epilepsy is a complex condition that can affect all aspects of a child’s life and are sensitive to the physical and emotional challenges seizures can cause. Our clinicians and support staff take the time to talk about epilepsy with parents and families — from explaining the purpose of anelectroencephalogram (EEG)to reviewing all treatment options and answering questions.

How we care for epilepsy

Since our founding as the first comprehensive pediatric epilepsy treatment unit, Boston Children’s Hospital Epilepsy Center has been at the forefront of pediatric epilepsy research and care. We are a Level 4 Epilepsy Center, recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, and one of the few Level 4 Epilepsy Centers in the country dedicated to caring for children.

In some cases, a child’s epilepsy is caused by an underlying disease, injury or brain development disorder. If that is the case, we closely coordinate our care with other groups at Boston Children’s who specialize in treating that condition.

If a genetic cause of epilepsy is suspected, ourEpilepsy Genetics Programcan provide clinical consultation, genetic evaluation and counseling.
