Lung Transplant Volume & Outcomes |Overview

The Boston Children's Hospital Lung Transplant team tracks and reviews many different quality metrics related to the performance of our program. We use these metrics to constantly improve the care of children undergoing lung transplantation.

Transplant volume

Our Lung Transplant Program is one of the largest pediatric programs in the country. Since its inception, it has performed more than 120 lung transplants, including single, bilateral and heart-lung transplants. The majority of our transplant recipients are children less than 18 years old.

Outcomes data are published biannually by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). The data below was released in January 2021.

Patient survival rates represent the percent of patients alive following a period of time after transplant. One-year data is for transplants occurring between 7/1/17 and 12/31/19.

Boston Children’s Hospital Lung Transplant team cares for and transplants some of the most complex patients. Patient and graft survival can be impacted by, among other things, recurrence of the primary disease, complications related to transplant, including poor adherence to medications schedules and the impact of long-term immunosuppression and complications due to other medical issues.
